Outcome of Chapter 5 Plot Hinge: The main image of the Globe and Mail on March 8th at 12:01 am, did not have a photo of a woman in it. As a result, Will has decided to trust Agent Isaiah and set him free.
Will woke up on the cold cement floor of a dark room. The only light spilled in from the crack at the bottom of the door. As his eyes slowly adjusted, Will got a better sense of his surroundings. The room was about six feet wide by ten feet long. A tiny cot lined one wall and there was a toilet in one of the corners. Will staggered to his feet and brushed his hand against the seven-foot-high concrete ceiling.
“Lovely,” Will muttered to himself, taking a seat on the edge of the cot.
The last thing Will remembered was untying Agent Isaiah at Isabella’s cabin. Clearly a mistake. The second the ropes were loosened, the Man in Charge attacked Will like a ninja on Red Bull. Will wasn’t even sure if he had time to cry out before being knocked unconscious.
Suddenly the room was bathed in light. Overhead florescent lights flickered and buzzed. Will jumped to his feet at the loud clanging of the metal door unlocking.
Squeaking on its hinges, the heavy door swung outward and two men carrying guns stepped inside the cell. Both wore matching black uniforms with a red “W” embroidered on their shirts. “Out,” one of the men said to Will, wagging his gun.
Will put his hands on his head and exited the room. The men escorted him down a long hallway lined with other cells. The corridor ended at a locked, metal door with a keypad next to it. One of the goons punched in a password and the door slid open.
Not far ahead of them Will saw an EXIT sign and for the briefest of moments thought they might be taking him there. They weren’t. Instead, they turned into a white-walled room and dumped Will in a metal chair behind a table. The room was large and almost blindingly bright.
After Will’s hands were handcuffed to the chair another man entered. He was tall and scrawny, with wisps of thinning black hair slicked back on a skeletal head. He looked at Will over glasses that sat perched on the end of a hooked nose.
Will would very soon come to hate this man.
“Hello, William,” he said with an oily smile that only made him look more like a skeleton. “My name is Dr. MacGregor. I’m here to ask you a few questions.”
Over the course of the next five days Will endured Dr. MacGregor’s “questions”. The interrogations lasted for hours on end.
The guards beat Will. MacGregor screamed at him. Bargained with him. Offered him money. Threatened his family. Deprived him of food and water.
They shoved photos of people he had never met before and demanded to know what his connections with them was. They left the lights on in his room and blared music at random intervals to keep him from sleeping. They held his head under water. They hooked him up to machines and injected him with chemicals.
And although the interrogation techniques varied, the heart of the questions always remained the same: Where is File 92?
It was usually the same two guards, Mills and Coghlan, working with Dr. MacGregor during their sessions. But one day, his mind foggy with drugs and lack of sleep, Will was sure he saw Agent Isaiah in the room with them too, standing in one of the corners, silently watching.
Will begged them to stop. He tried countless times to explain that he had nothing to do with the stolen documents. He even lied several times, confessing that he had File 92, in the hopes the interrogations would end. They didn’t.
At the end of day five, Will collapsed in his cot, his body in anguish. Coghlan made some gruff comment as he locked the door. Will couldn’t make out the words, his ears still ringing from the day’s interrogation.
Exhaustion overtook Will and he fell into a deep sleep. He dreamed he was back at the tattoo parlour, getting his tattoo so he could impress his co-worker, Beth. The tattooist finished and Will looked to his left shoulder to check out his handiwork. Instead of the intricate design he was expecting however, a cheesy heart with the word TINA tattooed across it was there instead.
Will looked up at the tattooist and demanded his money back. The big, burly man with the bushy mustache just chuckled at him.
Will woke up with a start. The tattooist. It was the same man from the photo in Isabella’s cabin. The same man from the photos Dr. MacGregor had been screaming at him about.
Before he could give it any more thought however, Will heard the sound of his door unlocking. Only this time the lights stayed off. Will waited for Coghlan or Mills to open the door, dreading another session so soon.
Confused, Will tip-toed to the door and put his ear against it. Silence. Did he imagine the noise? He gave the heavy door a nudge and it creaked open slightly. A rush of fear and excitement flooded through him. Pushing the door further, Will peeked into the dark and quiet hallway. No alarms, no guards, nothing.
Too good to be true, Will thought, stepping into the corridor. On the other hand, Will had always been taught to never look a gift horse in the mouth and he made his way down the hall. At every step he expected to be tackled or shot by Coghlan. Reaching the locked door at the end of the hall, he stared down at the electronic keypad.
Will racked his muddled brains. For the past five days he’d been discreetly watching Mills punch in the password in an attempt to memorize it. He knew this. Closing his eyes, Will concentrated as hard as he could, desperately trying to remember the code.
